A Max-Yamaniko double-deck Shinkansen (E4 Series) at the Ueno Sation,Tokyo, Japan. These 8-car bi-level shinkansen trains are broadly based on the earlier E1 series design, and are fitted with automatic retractable couplers at both ends, enabling them to be run in pairs to alleviate overcrowding on the busy Tohoku Shinkansen commuter route into Tokyo. This creates 16-car formations offering 1600 seats compared with the 1200 seats of previous 12-car E1 or 16-car 200 series units. As with the E1 series units, the upper deck seating in non-reserved standard class cars is arranged 3+3 abreast with non-reclining seats. 4 out of the 8 cars are powered with AC traction motors rated at 420 kW each, giving a maximum service speed of 240 km/h.
